The beginning

Director: A director is responsible for supervising the entire making of animated cartoon pictures. A director works in close proximity with various artists who work behind animated pictures and make them a huge success.

Storyboard artist: They make basic sketches of animated cartoon character. They suggest changes and improvements in the preliminary scripts. They instill the first dose of entertainment into the making of cartoon pictures.

Layout artist: They decide upon the layouts or backgrounds of cartoon pictures. They formulate a relationship between a cartoon character and its surroundings. They prepare rough backgrounds for the background artists and painters.

Editorial: This department decides upon the start and the end of a scene frame. They are also responsible for dialogs of an animated character and musical tracks.



The animation department

Lead animator: As the name suggests the lead animator is the overall in charge of animated picture. He is the stylist and dress designer of the lead cartoon character. It is their job to ensure that the cartoon drawings come to life in the form of animated movie.

Animator: An animator is mainly responsible for planning and timings of a cartoon scenes in cartoon pictures. His style of animation should be consistent with that of the style of the entire movie.

Ruff in betweener: He is responsible for cartoon drawings that the animator does not have time for. He also places a cartoon drawing in its place according to the chart compiled by the animator.

Animation picture clean-up department

Final animators or Clean-up artists: this department gives the final touch to animation pictures. The artists have an excellent drawing skills as well as graphical knowledge so that they are able to make final improvements or touch-ups. They ensure that the animated character are well placed and do not look out of picture in any scene. A good and keen clean-up is essential part of animated movie editing.

Lead key assistant: They are usually in charge of one cartoon drawing in an animated picture. Works in close proximity with the lead animator and the directors in designing the animated characters. They should be able to work in a number of line styles. They also assign the work to key assistants.

Key assistant: They give the final touch ups to the scenes and gives them to the Assistant Animator. They need to be skilled animators as well in order to ensure that the placement and timings of the scenes and frames are appropriate.

Assistant animator: The assistant animators supports the animators in finishing the extremes on model.

Breakdown artist: While keeping track of animators charts and spacings they finish off the animations.

Inbetweener: They are responsible for initiating the final drawings to smooth out an act in animated pictures. This is an entry level position in the animated cartoon pictures world.

These are just one or two line definitions of the artists involved in the making of animated cartoon pictures. However, the work done by them surpasses all limits. They work day and night and put in the hours to make the cartoon pictures entertaining, fun and successful.
