1. Let your imagination run wild

The difference between a cartoonist and an average person is that the cartoonist can see beyond conventional perceptions. For example, exaggeration is an intrinsic ingrediant of creating funny figures. Exaggerated body proportions, facial expressions and reactions add fun to what would otherwise be a realistic depiction. As a cartoonist your task is to get the point across even through the most absurd cartoon illustration. That is why the first tip is to let your imagination run wild and to let it go off the shackles.

2. Create your own brand of cartoons

In the beginning, it’s normal to be influenced with the cartoons you like. Your first cartoon might resemble Mickey Mouse or The Simpsons. But should better be in the beginning only. Once you are comfortable with cartoon character illustration, its better to create your own character style. The process is more satisfactory and easier too.

3. The closet

A cartoonist should have a few skeletons in the closet for inspiration in the future. You should collect cartoon strips, magazines and newspapers clips and store them in a closet for future reference. This idea has worked for many and would work for you too. You can also go to places as deviantart for character inspiration.

The sketchbook is never to be forgotten for a cartoonist. Idle doodling is the royal road to good cartoon drawings and without a sketchbook it is lost. You should also have it handy as spontaneous inspiration does not come with an appointment.

A pencil is to a cartoonist is what a gun is to a soldier. So know your pencils. H in pencils denotes sharpness and hardness. If you want thin lines this is it. B, on the other hand, denotes softness and thick lines.

6. Work area

Setting up the work area is of utmost importance. Small or specious, the work area has to be such that you can be comfortable and focus completely on creating cartoon characters. It does not really matter what others think of it, the place should be such that it helps you ideate.

7. How to use graphic tablets

Choose a decent tablet, such as Wacom, Cintio or if you are one of the serious kinds, then Intuos. You need to install drivers so that they are configured for your use.
