Create an animated cartoon character in 4 easy steps

You might have been surprised by the simple declaration above. Didn’t you always think that drawing animated characters is a highly complex and creative task. Here, we are going to see that creating cartoon characters is a creative task, yes, but it is not a complex task at all. Follow these five steps and you will have your own cartoon character ready.

Step-1: Generating the idea of an animated character

This is the first and the foremost step in the whole drawing process. You might already have an idea of the character. In that case, you will have to explore the different aspects of it. For example, ask yourself if it fulfils the purpose of creating it? Does it sum of the message in case you have a target audience?

However, if you are drawing for fun, then think about the character’s looks and personality. Is the character funny or serious; naughty or innocent; young or old; intelligent or average? How does the character walk and talk? Does it have a queer long nose or bunny teeth? The important point here is: Can you see your character the way you want others to see it?

Step-2: Drawing the sketches of the animated character

If you have completely visualized the character, then this step should be easy for you. It is more than probable that you have more than one visualization of the animation character. Begin with the one that you feel most strongly about and follow it to the end. After you have completely drawn it, follow the other ideas and sketch them too.

Step-3: The final selection and tweaks

If you can’t decide which of your sketches to select, show them to others and take their opinion. Because cartoon drawing is not just about what you thinks and other’s opinions can be helpful. Once you have finalized, its time to tweak the cartoon drawings. This is where you touch upon the hair, shorten the nose, make the eyes a little bigger to portray innocence etc. At the end of this exercise, your character should come alive and look exactly as you visualized.

Step-4: Develop a story board

Animated cartoon characters don’t exist in the vacuum. That is why you need a storyboard. If your character is a student, it needs to go to school and have friends too. This is about the environment that your character inhabits. Once you have a storyboard, you have a fully developed and complete animated character.
