We have the Nobel foundation that honor scientific geniuses and the Man Booker Prize that award the literary achievers. Then how can we not have a society that recognizes the talent behind animated cartoon pictures or even funny comic strips. The National Cartoonists Society is the world's largest and most prestigious organization that recognizes and awards the talented and upcoming cartoonists. Some of world known creators, animators, drawing professionals and illustrators of cartoon strips and animated pictures are members of National Cartoonists Society.
National Cartoonists Society was formed in 1946 when a small gang of creators of comic strips and cartoon pictures got together to entertain a group. They realized that they had a lot in common and decided to meet more often. However, the number of members kept growing just like the number of comic characters and animated pictures. Today the National Cartoonists Society has over 500 members from world over. The members are some of the best cartoonists and funniest animators that the history of cartoons has ever seen or known. The members are specialized in many branches of the profession such as newspaper comic strips and panels, comics, editorial cartoon strips, animation, pictures, gag strips, greeting card drawings, advertising, magazine strip drawing, book illustration, to name a few.
Any person may feel that drawing cartoon characters can only be a hobby but presence of such societies ensure that the world honors and recognizes real talent in comic drawings. Every year, during the National Cartoonist Society's Annual Reuben Awards Weekend, the Society honors the year's outstanding achievers in all walks of the cartoon world. Very sure that if these characters were alive they would be the happiest of all to know that their creators have been applauded. The awards include plaques for the year's best work in about a dozen categories, Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award, Silver T-shirt for excellent service to the profession and NCS as well and the most prestigious of all Reuben Award for outstanding cartoonist of the year. There are lots of other awards categoriesas well.
Famous creators of many animated characters Chuck Jones and Walt Disney are many time award holders in the animated pictures category. Brant Parker, the creator and illustrator of the funny comic strip Wizard of Id has also been bestowed many awards. There arecertain criteria that one has to fulfill in order to join National Cartoonists Society which includes getting two reference letters from existing members. So it would do good if you start building up your contacts as early as possible.
