Different kinds of comic strips

Comic strips and cartoons are enjoyed by almost everyone. But not many will know much about different kinds of strips and their differentiations. While we are aware that there are funny strips, detective strips, cartoon strips, humor and political strips, we will be at a loss beyond these general categories. Here we will explore the different categories of comic strips.

To start with there are animated cartoon strips, editorial cartoon strips, gag cartoons and comic strips. Funny strips are not a separate category as most strips have a thread of humor and fun running through them.

Gag cartoons are singular images with captions beneath them. These are generally published in magazines while political ones, which are similarly drawn, are published in newspapers. Gag cartoons are intended to be funny and have become a common feature in most magazines. Recently, these are also used in corporate newsletters and marketing brochures. The power of cartoons in simplifying and effectively transmitting the point is well understood. Now this aspect is utilized through gag cartoons to promote products, campaigns and special events. Editorial cartoons are also known as political cartoons. They generally contain a social or political message with reference to the current events. Editorial cartoon are published in the editorial pages of almost all newspapers today. They have a long history and cover wide ranging issues. Animated cartoon is defined by Wikipedia as “a short, hand-drawn (or made with computers to look similar to something hand-drawn) film for the cinema, television or computer screen, featuring some kind of story or plot (even if it is a very short one).” Animated cartoons can be traced back to the days of cave drawings which were are also the first form drawing that mankind practiced.

Comic strips are defined by Wikipedia as “a drawing or sequence of drawings that tells a story.” The comic strip or funny cartoon strip is generally drawn by an individual cartoonist. In some cases, the publishing company or an heir of the cartoonist takes over to maintain continuity after the demise of the cartoonist. These comic strips come either as paperbacks as well as in newspapers and magazines.
